When you have every possible modification added to your 1939 Ford and it still isn’t fast enough for you, there’s only one recourse. Add a jet engine.
That’s exactly what Joe Wilkins, a defense department contractor, did with his.
“I got hooked on the simplicity and power that this thing produced,” Wilkins said, “and I decided one day I want to put it in a car.”
Even before he added the extra juice, this was no slouch on the road. It takes the best parts of Detroit’s Big Three and combines them for ultimate performance. With a Chrysler engine, a Chevrolet drivetrain and the Ford body, it’s geared to go fast and look good doing it.
He will be letting it run flat out at the Bonneville Salt Flats to see how it stacks up against Bugatti, Shelby, and other street-legal cars that have hit high speeds there. Unfortunately, Wilkins will not be behind the wheel when the car guns for 300.
“I turned 61 last Sunday. I just don’t think I’m going to be able to handle it [without] the reflexes I had 20 or 30 years ago,” he said. “I know several people who would be more than interested.”
