Mustang fans are no doubt looking forward to the 2010 Detroit Auto Show, as Ford is poised to release the details surrounding the 2011 Mustang GT which will feature “5.0” badging yet again.
The all-new 5.0-liter V8 that will power the new Mustang GT will produce 412 horsepower and 390 lb. ft. of torque. Incredibly, despite the wealth of power this unit will be capable of unleashing, the Mustang GT will still earn a respectable 17 miles per gallon in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.
Competing against the new Ford Mustang GT is a slew of competitors from the pony car’s past. This includes the 426 horsepower Chevrolet Camaro SS and the 425 horsepower Dodge Challenger SRT8. Rounding out the Mustang lineup will also be a new 540 horsepower Shelby GT500 with a supercharged V8 engine.
The new 5.0 engine features four valves per cylinder and twin independent variable valve timing. Stainless steel exhaust headers enable this engine to breathe better, and it removes the need for hard core enthusiasts to replace the stock headers with aftermarket ones. Peak horsepower is reach at 6,500 rpm with a 7,000 rpm redline.
Thanks to a healthy use of aluminum and composite materials, the V8 engine is about twenty percent lighter than Mustang’s the previous 5.0 V8. Buyers of the 2011 Mustang can also harness this engine with a six-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual. Helping tame the power on the road will be electric power steering and an available Brembo brake package.
Look for the official debut of the 2011 Ford Mustang GT in January.
