Focus Named ‘Best over 35 MPG’ by Winding Road

by Ford in the News on January 19, 2012

According to the editors of Winding Road—a leading virtual magazine for real-world gearheads: “It’s not hard to build a car that’ll top 35 miles per gallon these days. What is hard to do is build a car that’ll top 35 mpg and still be entertaining to drive, enjoyable to live with, and pleasant to look at.”

But recognizing that that’s exactly what Ford has accomplished with the Ford Focus, Winding Road also recognized the car in its Best Cars of the Year rankings as the “Best over 35 MPG.”

Of course, the Focus is capable of well over that mark, with the SFE package bringing EPA ratings of 28 mpg city/40 mpg highway/33 mpg combined. And that’s even with one of the most powerful standard engines in its class. The Focus’ all-aluminum I4 engine with twin independent variable cam timing and gasoline direct injection makes a peppy 160 hp—22 more than a Chevy Cruze Eco. Ford’s powerplant can then be mated to either a slick-shifting five-speed manual transmission or the company’s advanced PowerShift six-speed automatic, which is available with SelectShift functionality for manual control over gear selection.

The Focus also offers the latest generation SYNC with MyFord Touch connectivity and infotainment system, featuring both an 8-inch center-stack touchscreen and a 4.2-inch screen incorporated into the gauge cluster, along with leading-edge voice-recognition technology that’s been fine-tuned for ease of use.

Winding Road lauded the appearance of the Focus as well: “It’s an attractive design, especially in five-door trim, with big wheels and a sculpted exterior that looks downright premium.”
