The Ford Motor Company has found plenty of sales success recently, thanks to a stable of popular products that offer both high quality and high fuel-efficiency ratings. And with coming new small cars like the Ford Fiesta and completely redesigned Ford Focus on their way, along with an ever-expanding role for the cutting-edge EcoBoost engine, that’s not likely to change.
In fact, customers will soon have more reasons than ever for turning to the Blue Oval for green vehicles: The automaker is unveiling two new technologies on its advanced MyFord Touch driver-connect system that will help owners get the most miles out of their fuel tanks.
First, the system can be configured to provide drivers with real-time information about their fuel-efficiency performance, as well as an easy-to-read graphical representation of their average miles-per-gallon results for the previous 5, 10 and 30 minutes. This provides drivers with immediate evidence of how following a few simple gas-saving rules can have a real-world impact on saving fuel—and money—while effectively “coaching” drivers to do even better.
In addition, drivers can use the map-based navigation system that’s part of MyFord Touch to find not only the shortest or fastest route between points, but also the most fuel-efficient. According to Ford, this Eco-Route functionality can lead to fuel economy gains of up to 15 percent.
“We have learned that when we provide drivers the information and tools in an interactive and entertaining way, they want to drive more fuel efficiently,” said Jim Buczkowski, Ford’s director of global electrical and electronics systems engineering. “MyFord Touch provides an unprecedented level of information and interaction so drivers can make the choice to be more fuel efficient.”
The MyFord Touch system, with this fuel-saving functionality, will debut on the 2011 Ford Edge, which goes on sale later this year.
