Continuing its ongoing commitment to providing the public with a transparent look at both its progress and its future plans to address pressing environmental, safety and social issues, the Ford Motor Company recently released its 12th annual corporate sustainability report, titled “Blueprint for Sustainability: Driving Change.”
Highlights of this year’s report—which covers Ford sustainability efforts for calendar year 2010—include environmental achievements like:
- Reducing CO2 emissions from 2010 model-year vehicles in the U.S. by 10.5 percent as compared to 2006.
- Offering 12 vehicles with best-in-class fuel economy and four models that can achieve at least 40 mpg highway—a lineup unmatched by any other full-line automaker.
- Began delivery of its first all-electric vehicle, the Ford Transit Connect Electric; the company’s next EV, the Ford Focus
- Electric, will go on sale later this year, followed by three more electrified vehicles—including the Ford C-MAX Hybrid and
- Ford C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid—by 2013.
Safety advances such as:
- Earning Top Safety Pick Status from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for both the Ford Focus and Ford Fiesta, the latter of which also leads its segment in the New Car Assessment Program ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
- Expanding its Driving Skills for Life driver-education program for teens from nine to 15 states, courtesy of an investment of $1 million.
And societal efforts that included:
- Listing water as one of its top sustainability concerns; Ford already began making a concerted effort to reduce the amount of water used per vehicle, reducing this amount by 49 percent since 2000. The company aims to decrease water usage by a further 5 percent this year.
- Collaborating in the establishment of common industry guidance and reporting formats for global automakers and tier 1 suppliers to use in tracking greenhouse gas emissions.
“The Blueprint for Sustainability encompasses a wide range of efforts at Ford to provide sustainable transportation around the world,” said Sue Cischke, Ford group vice president, Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering. “Ford is committed to reducing the environmental impact of its products and facilities, supporting positive social change and ensuring economic viability for long-term growth.”
