With all apologies to Tony Stark, here in the real world being an “Ironman” requires swimming 2.4 miles, biking 112 and then running a full 26.2-mile marathon, all without the benefit of a high-tech battle suit. And when it comes to the Official Vehicle of the Ironman Series for extreme triathletes, the ride isn’t some kind of one-dimensional German sports car—it’s the versatile 2011 Ford Edge.
Ford had already been a sponsor of the grueling endurance events—including the annual Ironman World Championship held in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii—for six years. The latest partnership builds on what’s been a highly successful relationship, and also adds another new feature: The automaker has founded a new online community for endurance athletes at FordTrainingTeam.com.
“Many endurance athletes like to join clubs where they can compare notes and compete with other athletes,” said Jim Peters, manager, Ford Brand Content and Alliances. “This website provides a forum for them to do just that. It also offers tips on conditioning, nutrition and videos from the pros, like Ironman athlete Chris Lieto.”
Naturally, the site also will be used to keep members aware of the latest Ford products, including the 2011 Edge. Ford’s eyecatching midsize crossover has attracted more than 380,000 customers since it was introduced in 2006, and the updated model is well-positioned to continue that momentum.
The biggest changes for the Edge are under the hood, where three new powertrains will be available, including North America’s first four-cylinder EcoBoost engine, a responsive, efficient mill that delivers the same kind of power found in a V6 along with best-in-class fuel efficiency. Also on tap for the ‘11 Edge are two advanced new V6s. A 3.5-liter engine making 285 hp and 253 ft.-lb. of torque will be optional on the Edge proper, while a hi-po 3.7-liter powerplant delivering 305 hp and 280 ft.-lb. of torque will motivate the Edge Sport.
In addition, the new Edge will mark the debut of the MyFord Touch driver connect technology, taking the Ford SYNC system to a new level of performance. MyFord Touch is designed to present drivers with an interface that’s much more similar to those found on portable electronic devices, with a minimal amount of menu layering, making it easier to use than ever.
The 2011 Edge goes on sale later this year at local Ford dealerships around the country—and you won’t have to run a triathlon to buy one.
