Ford’s Transit Connect may look like an odd addition to the lineup, but despite its unusual styling, the Transit Connect is all about business and utility. Largely because it so effectively executes its singular purpose as an affordable yet capable utility vehicle, the Transit Connect was just awarded the coveted title of the 2010 North American Truck of the Year.
The award for the 2010 North American Truck of the Year goes to the vehicle that is exemplary in a number of areas including design, handling, safety, driver satisfaction, and value. The judges for this award consist of 50 automotive journalists in both the U.S. and Canada. To be eligible to win this award, the vehicle must be either all-new or substantially updated from the previous model.
Ford’s 2010 Transit Connect is relatively new to U.S. consumers, but it’s a global product that has been available in Europe prior to its launch here in the U.S. Perhaps its most useful applications will be for commercial business use, thanks to the Transit Connect’s cavernous 135 cubic foot cargo area that can a carry a 1,600 pound payload. The Transit Connect not only delivers cargo-carrying capabilities that few vans or SUVs can mimic, but it also provides outstanding fuel economy thanks to its 2.0-liter four cylinder engine that gets 22 miles per gallon city and 25 mpg highway.
While the Ford Transit Connect is still relatively new to American customers, 600,000 units have already been sold in 58 countries. As the recipient of the North American Truck of the Year, many more units will surely be sold here in the States.
